We’re all about eliminating waste in a safe and simple way. Composting is one way to achieve this! It’s easy to do it yourself and doesn’t have to be complicated with these 6 easy steps.
The EPA says all composting requires three basic ingredients:
Browns: This includes materials like dead leaves, branches, and twigs.
Greens: This includes materials like grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps and coffee grounds.
Water: Having the right amount of water, greens and browns is important for compost development.
What to compost:
Fruits and vegetables, eggshells, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, nut shells, shredded newspaper, cardboard, paper, yard trimmings, grass clippings, houseplants, hay and straw, leaves, sawdust, wood chips, cotton and wool rags, dryer and vacuum cleaner lint, hair and fur, fireplace ashes.
Steps to composting:
1. Build a Bin
Constructing a bin to compost is the best way to avoid messes. Plus, it keeps the animals away if you’re composting food scraps. A good minimum size for a pile should at least be 1 cubic yard or 1 cubic meter, but it can also be larger.
2. Find a Spot
Pick out a dry, shady spot near a water source for your compost pile or bin.
3. Mix it Up
Add brown and green materials as they are collected. Make sure larger pieces are chopped up or shredded.
Moisten dry materials as you add them.
5. Go Green
Once you have your pile started, throw in grass clippings and green waste and bury fruit and vegetable waste under 10 inches of compost material.
6. Cover Up
Put a top over the bin to keep it moist (optional). The EPA says your compost should be ready when the material at the bottom is dark and rich in color. This can be anywhere between two months to two years.
