You’re at the end of your rope cleaning his running gear that never seems to smell fresh and clean like they used too. You’re getting ready to bid farewell to your favorite sports bras that are branded with sweat stains, no matter how many times you throw them in the wash. Don’t throw them out just yet! Launder your favorite workout clothes back to life and remove odor from exercise clothes with these 7 simple cleaning tips.
1 | Avoid the hamper
Once you’re done getting your heart pumping and sweat flowing, take those workout clothes off and air them out ASAP. If you aren’t able to wash them right away, let them hang dry first to air out the salty sweat still trapped in the fabric. Piling up gym clothes for too long can start to breed mold and mildew spores that can be trapped in the fabric (even after washing). Avoid the ick-fest by simply letting them dry out first.
2 | Pre-Soak treatment
Bleach is harsh and can be toxic, but still many people use it for pre-soak treatments. This is a sure fire way of getting rid of built-up body odor in clothing. It’s simple. Just warm water in your sink, let your garments sit for about an hour, and voila! 3 | Lather with lemon

Try diluting one ounce of laundry detergent in a half gallon of warm water and squeezing a whole lemon into the solution. Gently scrub the armpits, neckline, bottom of your gym bag and any other odor-filled areas with the solution before washing. The leftover citrus smell is an added bonus!
4 | Wash with white vinegar
Using vinegar to fight off odor and bacteria build up can be very effective. Throw your workout clothes in the washer and use warm water on a regular cycle. During the rinse cycle, add two ounces of white vinegar. Tumble dry at a low temperature. If you can still smell sweat, repeat the process until the garments and workout items smell oh-so-fresh.
5 | Do away with fabric softener (and lighten up on the detergent!)
Fabric softener and loads of soap should leave your gym clothes smelling fresh, right? Wrong. Fabric softener actually leaves behind a coating that will prevent clothes from getting fully cleaned. And try using a less detergent, too, to prevent build up on techie-type fabrics. If you continue to smell lingering odors, try running your clothes through the wash without any detergent at all. This can help rinse away any lingering excess detergent or fabric softener so you can.
6 | Cold water only
